How to Block Knitting: Wet, Steam, and Spray Methods

What Blocking Actually Does
Blocking is the step where a finished knit stops looking like a pile of loops and starts looking like the pattern photo. It's the process of wetting or steaming your fabric, then pinning or smoothing it to its finished measurements while it dries. As the fibers relax, stitches even out, curling edges lie flat, lace opens up into the pattern it was designed to show, and seams sit straighter.
Do you have to block knitting? Not always, but it's worth it more often than not. A garter-stitch dishcloth or a plain acrylic hat doesn't need it. A lace shawl, a fitted sweater, or anything with a written finished-measurement schematic almost always benefits — sometimes dramatically. There are three main ways to do it: wet blocking, steam blocking, and spray blocking. They all aim for the same result — relaxed, even, correctly sized fabric — but they differ in how much they reshape the fiber, how much control they give you, and what happens when they go wrong.

The short version: if you need to open up a lace pattern or hit specific finished measurements, wet block. If your piece is already close to size and just needs edges relaxed and seams smoothed, steam block. If you're nervous about overworking a delicate or blended yarn, spray block and pin gently.
Wet Blocking
Wet blocking is the most thorough method, and it's the method most patterns' finished-measurement schematics are written for — especially in wool and other animal fibers, which respond strongly to moisture.
Why it works: submerging the fibers in water lets them fully relax and lose the "memory" of being wound on a needle. That's what allows lace to bloom open and stockinette to lie flat instead of curling.
How to do it:
- Fill a basin with lukewarm (not hot) water, adding a wool wash if you're using one made for delicates.
- Submerge the piece and let it soak for 15–20 minutes, gently pressing it under the water. Never rub, twist, or agitate — that's how felting starts on untreated wool.
- Lift it out supporting the whole piece with both hands, and press (don't wring) the water out. Roll it in a dry towel and press firmly to blot out more moisture.
- Lay the damp piece on blocking mats and pin it to your target measurements, using the schematic in your pattern as a guide. Rustproof T-pins or blocking wires both work; wires are faster for straight edges like sweater fronts.
- Let it dry completely before unpinning — this can take anywhere from a few hours to overnight depending on fiber and humidity.
Worth knowing: wet blocking is slow, and it's not gentle. On a loosely spun or delicate yarn, the weight of the wet fabric can pull stitches more than intended if you don't support the piece while it's saturated. Pin to your measurements rather than hauling the fabric out to reach them — if you have to fight the piece to hit a number, the piece is telling you something about your gauge. Wet blocking is also overkill for a plain washcloth or a quick swatch check when steam or spray would do the job faster.
Steam Blocking
Steam blocking uses heat and moisture from an iron or handheld steamer instead of a full soak. It's faster and better suited to touch-ups than dramatic reshaping.
Why it works: steam relaxes fibers similarly to a wet soak but in a more localized, controllable way, without waiting hours for the whole piece to dry.
How to do it:
- Pin the piece to rough shape on a blocking mat or ironing surface, right side up.
- Hold a steamer or iron on a steam setting a few inches above the fabric — never rest the iron's plate directly on the knit. Contact flattens stitch definition permanently, and on synthetics it can melt or glaze the surface outright.
- Move steadily across the piece in short passes, letting the steam penetrate before moving on. Don't park the steamer over one spot.
- Smooth seams and edges by hand while the fabric is warm and pliable.
- Let the piece cool and dry fully before unpinning.
Worth knowing: steam blocking has less power to change actual dimensions than a wet soak, so it's not the method to reach for if you're trying to open up a lace panel or add real inches to a piece that came out small.
It also needs real caution on acrylic and other synthetics, and the reason is often described backwards. Acrylic is a thermoplastic: heat, not contact, is what permanently relaxes its elasticity — the effect knitters call "killing" acrylic. A steamer held above the fabric delivers plenty of heat, so hovering is not a safeguard. Hold it close, or dwell in one spot, and you can kill the ribbing on an acrylic hat without the iron ever touching it. What actually controls the outcome is how much heat you deliver: distance, dwell time, and steam volume. Keep the steamer several inches back, work in short bursts, keep moving, and test on a swatch of the same yarn first. Letting a hot plate rest on acrylic is a separate and worse problem — that melts and glazes the fibers, and nothing undoes it.
That permanent relaxation is a legitimate technique when you want it: a flat, drapey acrylic stole benefits from it. It's simply a one-way door, and a disaster in ribbing, cuffs, or a fitted hat.
Spray Blocking
Spray blocking is the lightest-touch option: pin the piece dry, then mist it with water until it's evenly damp.
Why it works: the fabric relaxes without ever being fully saturated, so there's no weight of water pulling the stitches around and no soaking-and-handling step where a fragile yarn can be stretched or felted. That makes it a safer default for fibers you're unsure about — silk blends, some plant fibers, or novelty yarns without a clear care label.
How to do it:
- Pin the dry piece to your target measurements on a blocking mat. Because the fabric isn't relaxed yet, pin the corners and midpoints first, then fill in between them so the tension stays even.
- Mist thoroughly with a spray bottle of clean water until damp, not soaked. A fine mist held a foot or so away covers more evenly than a close, heavy spray, which leaves wet and dry patches that relax differently.
- Smooth the fabric flat by hand and adjust pins as needed — the piece gives a little as it dampens, and that's your chance to true up the edges.
- Let it air dry fully in place, out of direct sun and away from a radiator, both of which dry the surface before the fiber underneath has relaxed.
Worth knowing: because the fiber never fully saturates, spray blocking has the least reshaping power of the three methods. That's a limit of effectiveness, not of patience — leaving a sprayed piece pinned longer won't produce the dimensional change a soak would, because the constraint is how far the fiber relaxes, not how long you wait. It's an excellent choice for small accessories, swatches, and pieces that just need evening out, and a poor one for a sweater front that came out two inches narrow.
Blocking by Fiber
Blocking behavior depends heavily on what you're knitting with, which is one more reason to check the yarn's fiber content before you start.
- Untreated wool responds dramatically to wet blocking — lace opens up, stitches even out, and because wool's crimp gives it genuine elastic memory, the effect can last through the piece's life if you reblock after washing. Keep the water lukewarm and never agitate; hot water plus movement is exactly how felting happens.
- Alpaca, mohair, and other low-crimp animal fibers take blocking beautifully but hold it less well than sheep's wool. Alpaca in particular has little crimp and little elastic memory, so it drapes heavily and tends to grow — a blocked alpaca piece lengthens under its own weight over time and needs reblocking more often. Block it to measurement rather than past it, and store the finished piece folded rather than hung.
- Superwash wool blocks out very readily — often too readily. The treatment that makes it machine-washable removes or coats the scales on the fiber surface, and with them much of the yarn's springiness, so a wet superwash piece stretches easily under its own weight and under pins. It will cheerfully block an inch or two larger than you intended and stay there. Pin superwash to your target measurement rather than stretching it out to reach one, support it while it's saturated, and expect to reblock after every wash — it relaxes back more than untreated wool does.
- Acrylic and other synthetics don't respond to water the way protein fibers do — moisture alone won't reshape them much. Heat does, and that change is largely permanent, trading elasticity for drape. Spray or brief, distant steam is the safer starting point; save heavier steaming for pieces where you actively want that flatter, drapier finish, and never let a hot iron plate touch the fabric.
- Cotton, linen, silk, and blends of them block modestly and don't hold shape as long as wool, because none of them have wool's elastic memory. Cotton relaxes noticeably after each wash and needs reblocking to look sharp again. Silk takes a beautiful blocked drape but is heavy and slack when wet, so support it fully and pin without tension. Rayon-family fibers such as bamboo and viscose are the most fragile of the group when saturated and stretch very easily — spray blocking is usually the safer call there.
What You'll Need
A basic blocking setup is inexpensive and lasts for years. The core kit is three things: interlocking foam mats to pin into, rustproof pins or blocking wires, and a tape measure alongside your pattern's schematic so you're blocking to a number rather than to a feeling.
Mats matter more than beginners expect: thin ones let long pins poke through to the table, and a set that's too small forces you to block a sweater body in sections. Pins should be rustproof — plain steel leaves orange marks on damp knitting that don't always wash out — and T-pins hold in foam better than straight dressmaker pins. Blocking wires are optional but transform straight edges: threaded through a selvedge, they spread tension evenly instead of scalloping between pin points.
Beyond that: a spray bottle, a handheld steamer or an iron with a steam setting, and two or three old bath towels for rolling water out of wet-blocked pieces. A no-rinse wool wash is nice but not required. Prices vary by retailer, but a serviceable starter kit of mats, T-pins, and a spray bottle typically lands somewhere in the $25–$50 range, with wires and a steamer as later additions. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping the swatch. If you plan to block your finished piece, block your gauge swatch the same way first — blocking can change stitch and row gauge enough to matter on a fitted project.
- Using hot water on wool. Heat plus movement is what causes felting; lukewarm water and no agitation keeps fibers from locking together.
- Assuming that hovering makes acrylic safe. It doesn't — heat alone kills acrylic's stretch, and a steamer held close for too long will do it through thin air. Control distance and dwell time, work in short bursts, and test on a swatch.
- Letting an iron plate touch the knit. This flattens stitch texture on any fiber and can melt or glaze synthetics. Steam from above, always.
- Stretching to the measurement instead of pinning to it. Especially on superwash wool and alpaca, a piece hauled out to hit a number will simply stay that size. If the fabric resists, the problem is gauge, not blocking.
- Unpinning before the piece is fully dry. A piece that's still damp when unpinned will relax back toward its original shape, undoing some of the work.

Blocking rewards patience more than any special skill. Pick the method that matches your fiber and how much reshaping the piece actually needs, and accept that the finishing step costs a few hours — mostly unattended drying time, and overnight if you've wet blocked a sweater. It consistently pays for itself in how professional the finished piece looks.
